Gotham City and Metropolis are in driving range of each other.

And here I was thinking they were the same thing.

I always thought Gotham was analogous to NYC, and Metropolis analogous to Washington DC.
That would suggest they aren't too far apart.
Of course they aren't exact representations of the real cities.

i was always under the impression that Gotham was Chicago, IL and Metropolis was NY, NY. The parallels are kinda obvious for Gotham.

Gotham is referred to in NYC... like the Gotham Comedy Club, and probably much more.
Gotham is a geographically confined, and thus tall-built city. It has rivers and islands in the rivers, is coastal, and is referred to by Ra's Algul as being the most powerful city in the world, like Rome and other past centers of civilization.
None of that fits Chicago, a much more wide-spread city.
In the Dark Knight, the reactor/bomb is flown out over the atlantic, not likely to be Lake Michigan, which isn't really wide enough for much of a minimum safe distance.
Arkham Asylum being on an island in the narrows always reminded me of a middle-ground between Riker's Island, and Manhattan. Smaller than Manhattan, but bigger than Rikers, with multiple bridges, and citizens living on it, not just the prison/asylum.
Metropolis is much more of a composite... it probably could be Chicago, or Boston, or Washington DC... but a much flatter, more open, more sunlit city than dark, tall Gotham. Chicago wouldn't be far from Superman's mid-western adopted home town. Washington DC is a brighter, white marble city, though. And any of them have major national-level newspapers like the Daily Planet would be.

well that's pretty convincing when you put it like that. i was just going to say Chicago has gargoyles, Gotham has gargoyles... Coincidence?
Well... probably.
